Another Filipino Discrimination

Filipino PrideIn an interview with Alec Baldwin last May 12, 2009 on the Late Night Show with David Letterman, he said that he would love to have more children. He also said thinking of geting Filipina mail-order bride or a Russian one. With his statement he made some Filipinos angry. One of them is Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla. He said in an interview that there will be a fight if he saw the actor. Another group of people became angry with him are some of the Philippine Woman Rights Group. They said that he needs to have a public apology for the words he said about Filipina women. This is just one of the many incidents of discrimination to us. Like the insult of Teri Hatcher in the show of desperate housewives about medical practitioners from our country and the article of Chip Tsao. If they think its funny its not. I don’t know why they do these, maybe they just having fun. But why us? We Filipinos are known for our hospitality to others especially to foreigners so why do these to us if we are kind to them right? These insults proves that there are still people who thinks Filipinos are incapable of doing great things. We do our best to do well in terms of learning, working, entertainment, government and empowering oneself. We are also capable of doing great things like in fashion and sports. With all of our efforts and success, I hope one day they won’t look us with discrimination but instead with admiration. I know that day will come.

Children’s Status

I watched a Jessica Soho special last night and it tackles about the status of kids. I was surprised about the things they discovered. The topic there that really caught my attention is the Child Labor. There is one place in Rizal where most children work. There is a kid(13) there whose family’s source of income is making charcoal and they live on mountain. The kid is too short for his age and he maybe mistaken by a 9 years old. He and his siblings are the one who bring the sack of charcoal down the mountain. And do you know that the sack that they are carrying is more than there own weght! And bringing that sack down is too dangereous because the mountain is too steep, too rocky and they will cross a river. With an interview with the kid he said “I’m just doing this because if I don’t then we will not any thing to eat and I cannot go to school” and he added “And i’m helping my parents”. There is also an interview with the kids parents and they said “We are sad that our children need to this. If there is a way for them not to help us anymore we will do that so that they won’t need to suffer but there isn’t. While I was watching that, I feel pity for them so much espicially with the kids and thats the time I realized that I were so lucky with my life; having the opportunity to enter a private school, to eat 3 times a day, and I don’t need to work at a very young age. Another topic there tackles about kids joining pageant contest. The contestants are very young yet very desperate to win the award because they want to give the prize to their parents. Some kids who belonged in the honor roll absent themselves just to practice, others compete even though they are sick and others need to express so much talent. One kid that really caught my eyes is the one who danced in a broken glasses. The judges, crew and even me is so shocked when the kid do the.

Is this the status of our children nowadays? Working at a very young age? Used by the parents to gain income? Not able to study? Its really disappointing. There is one saying said by our national hero Jose Rizal “Ang mga bata ay pagasa ng bayan” or in english children are the hope for our country. If Rizal see this one he will be dissapointed the way like I am. How could the children be the hope if they didn’t study and enjoy there life. I myself noticed this one. I can see many children asking for alms in the street and give their profit to their parents. I also know someone who work for his family and he even stop going to school just to help and his work is not enough to support his family. I really pity him.
I hope the government will give attention to this one.

Other Alternatives for Fuel

Nowadays, we are experiencing the increase in price of gasoline resulting to the increase on other commodities such as fish, meat, vegetables and the like. We are also experiencing Global Warming because of the carbon dioxide released in the by some factories and cars. So in order to prevent those we need to find some other alternatives for fuel so that we could lessen the emmision of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. When you say another alternative for gas, the first thing that would come up to your mind is BioDiesel. So what is Biodiesel? Biodiesel is a non-petroleum based fuel mainly made from animal fats or vegetable oils. Why use Biodiesel? First, when you use Biodiesel, you will surely won’t throw anything. Like for example, I said earlier that biodiesel is made from animal fats or vegetable oils, If you will cook or fry meat or any fatty foods you can use the fatty oils left to turn it as a Bio diesel.

Ethanol from cornAnother example is using Ethanol. Ethanol is abbreviated as EtOH. It is a product of fermented suger and starch crops like corns. It is a clear liquid with a sweet taste (because it came from a fermented sugar). Ethanol had already existed during the past since the Neolithic Age. There are also some ethanol came from grass and trees which is called bio-ethanol. Why use ethanol? It is renewable and it contains high amount of oxygen that provides a cleaner and more efficient burning alternative fuel. You can also use electric cars. Electric cars are cars which is run by electricity. It means it is a rechargeable car! Electric cars are already accepted by the people in the world nowadays. Like here in the Philippines, some of the Jeepney drivers in Makati are already using electric Jeepney. The Electric Jeepney is the first public transport system of its kind in Southeast Asia. drivers said that its cheaper than buying fuel. Why use electric cars? Using of electricity in cars would do a lot. It can save money and also save mother EarthElectric Jeepney

Think about this, why not choose what is the best for you amd your car? If you use fuel you will emit carbon monoxide in the atmosphere and it also costs much money. But if you use alternatives such as Ethanol, Biodiesel and Electricity you can save money and save Earth.

Animal Cruelty

Did you ever realize what is the story behind those meat that you eat? Did you ask yourself on how the animals being put on death for your food?

I watched a documentary last Saturday in GMA7. In Jessica Soho. Its about animal cruelty. Some of the animals there are cows, horses, pigs and goats. In the documentary, it shows on how humans kill animals for the sake of food. And it also said something on how humane the way of killing animals goes. There featured some “matansero” (people who kill goats). First, they forcedly let the goat drink vinegar. Then they will start killing it. And in some provinces in the Cordillera, they have a cuisine called “pinikpikan”. They first hold the chicken by the feet and wings in one hand. Hit the back of the head with the stick, just below the comb. Isn’t that cruel. The chicken dies slowly, and it feels pain and its terrible to look at. And then another story there is a man who would sell his horse because of their needs. The way of people used to kill the horse is they hit it with something that looks like an axe so that it would easily sleep. Whenever they kill those poor animals I hear cries, sobs, and their pain. I can’t stand looking at it.

Try to think of this, what if we are the food of the animals? And they will also do the same on us. What you would feel? Of course you would say that they are so selfish and cruel! What if they also saying it to us whenever we kill them. There’s still a way on how we could stop it. Like being a vegan. It would benefit you, the animals and also the Earth. That is what PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is trying to fight for, to stop animal cruelty.

Global Warming

7 continents, one problem, Global Warming. I know you’ve already heard this word. And we all know that this is a serious problem. Global Warming is composed of Greenhouse gasses which contains of carbon dioxide. Everyone of us contribute on Global Warming. Many human activities involved in this problem. Like those smoke belching cars, combustion of fossil fuels, using of such electricity and many more. We can feel now the result of it. It has effect on the water, land and air. In water, one of this is coral bleaching. It means coral bleachingthat the colors of the corals are disappearing. It is because of the Global Warming. When the corals bleached, coral bleaching it will take months or maybe years to recover. Second effect is the melting of the polar caps. Once the polar caps melt, the the water increases. And when this happen the people living nearby the sea may experience flood. Third effect is the water became acidic. When water absorb the chemicals the chemicals turn into acid. It can harm the aquatic ecosystem. Fourth is the coastal erosion. I watched a documentary which tackles about Global Warming. There is a portion there that studies the effects of the Global Warming on the water and land. Coastal erosion is one of the effects featured. They showed a coastal land with measures about 36 meters but because of coastal erosion, the land that measure 36 meters is now 3 meters. On land, one effect is the spreading of tropical diseases like malaria, dengue fever, scabies and many more. In the way our weather changes, it is not possible to have that kinds of diseases. Many people living in the mountains and the ethnic tribes are affected by this problems. And because they lack money, they cannot go to the nearest hospital and buy medicines. So they only cure their diseases means of herbal medicines and some tribal ritual. The government lack attention on the peoples who live in mountains and also the ethnics. That is why the peoples in the tribe suffer and unfortunately die. Second is the effect of the extreme heat. Which cause wildfires. Wildfire cause destruction on the forest’s ecosystem and can also destroy some houses and other structures. This make the animals living there, nowhere to live. Extreme heat cause a land to be dry. And this affects on the production of some agricultural products like rice, corn, wheat, and the like. It may cause a shortage to a country whose staple food is relying on the agricultural products. And in air, it causes some catastrophic disaster. Like strong storms, hurricane, and also a big whirlwind. Which causes destruction of structures and deaths of several peoples. We can do something about it. Even a small child can help preventing Global Warming. Even a small act helps great. Even turning off an electrical appliance when not in use, recycling some useful materials can help us fight global warming. There are now some some inventions and research that can help us to fight Global Warming. There renewable energies which are more environment friendly like Biofuels, Biomass, Geothermal, Hydro power, Solar power, Tidal power, Wave power, Wind power. With the use of these we can make our planet greener. Remember that all of us contribute on the Global Warming, and we are the one who will be the most affected. And only us can solve this problem.

Can I Have More Rice?

Rice is our staple food. We Filipinos are fond of eating rice. Every time I take my meal the rice is always there. Every time I’ll eat outside the house there is rice. Every time there is a specialrice shortage event there is the rice in my plate. But now that they say there is a rice shortage, could we carry the rising price of our major needs especially rice. As a kid I can sense what are the problems in my surroundings. Financial problems, Personal problems, Emotional problems and the like. But a rice shortage, its a serious problem. In the past few years we do not encounter a kind of problem like this. Because there are many rice farms in those years. There are plenty of rice that time, and its price is low. But now look, those farms that was being used to supply our rice. They are replaced by high-rise buildings, malls, factories, condominiums and many othert establishments. That made our rice productions lower. While surfing the net I found this story. There was a farmer with his wife and 3 children. The farmer only earn enough to supply their needs every day. During their past few years, they can buy rice that costs only cheap. But as the time passes by, the amount of their regular rice goes higher and higher. Until they were forced to buy NFA rice. One day as the farmer’s wife gone to the market, as she arrives she seen that there were no NFA rice anymore that was being sold. So she decided to buy a commercial rice. She was shocked when she look anywhere in the market she couldn’t find any store where she can buy commercial rice. She asked one of the seller why that they don’t have any more rice, and the seller said ” because when there were no more stock of NFA rice the people forced to buy commercial rice”. She thought that her neighbor could have rice and please her if she could borrow some. And then she came on the house of their neighbor. But they have also the same problem. Her neighbor doesn’t have rice for their meal the next day. They also gone to their other neighbors but their neighbor’s rice is only enough for them. And they both go home sad. The couples asked what to do. They planned that they will prepare many “ulam” so that they could replace their rice with the use of that. The morning came, they were starting to eat their breakfast. The oldest of their child said “Wow! Chicken, but mom where’s our rice?”. This story tells us a story of a typical family who eats rice every meal that they have. I already noticed its effects. Like one of the restaurant, that we were always there when we want to eat outside the house to have our dinner. There is a promo there “Free extra rice”. But now, since the rice increase its price the restaurant cannot handle that promo anymore. If I could only pass a law which states that there should be only selected areas that are allowed to be build by any establishment(s) and there will be areas that will remain the same as the people knew it. Like in provinces, farms should not be allowed to be replaced by any structure. And the government will declare areas that buildings or any establishments are allowed to be built. So that we can remain the balance of a newly industrialized country and an agrarian country.
